More undeserving, and that’s a wonderful thing…
Last night, I had the distinct pleasure of watching (for the 3rd time, in my life) Mel Gibson‘s The Passion of the Christ with some good friends, and I have to say that movie gets more intense every time I watch it.
As we approach Easter in 2 days it is so easy to get wrapped up in the candy, festivities, Easter-egg hunts, and pastel color schemes that we forget why we are celebrating in the first place. Sound familiar? (think of that BIG holiday on December 25th)
We are all guilty of it, and I know I am by no means immune. However, amongst the hustle and bustle of my busy week making time to watch this film with some good friends was nothing but rewarding.
Though many have a hard time watching this movie because of its realistic intensity, that is the exact reason I felt like I needed to see it. Over the centuries, mankind has loved playing this never-ending finger pointing game in which we blame the death of Christ on different people, groups, and causes, but the reality of it is…
We killed him…
While having a brief discussion last night after the film with my fellow viewers it was mentioned that, “Jesus would have never had to die if we weren’t such screw-ups…” Now, this may be no profound theological statement, but think about it, He died for our sins.
We, my friends, were spared.
That should of been us hanging on that cross, but He chose to take our place. I cannot think or even fathom a love story more beautiful than that.
So, am I asking you to go watch the Passion right now? No, but I would recommend it to make the reality of Christ’s death and resurrection vivid and real.
What I am asking you to do (along with asking myself) is this Easter remember that the cross is empty because our God is alive, so let’s start living like we’ve been spared from death because that’s the only truth I know.
I wish you all an amazing Easter!
-Jeremy
